Firefighting foams have become highly widespread due to their effectiveness extinguishing jet fuel and petroleum fires. Although great in fighting these types of fires, studies are now showing that it can cause kidney, testicular, and certain types of cancer in firefighters who were exposed to these types of foam. Known officially as aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF), firefighting foam creates a blanket that cuts off the fuel from the oxygen it needs to burn. To help smother the fire, chemicals known as perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) were, and in some circumstances, still are used. The highly durable nature of PFAS means they do not break down over time, due to this, they may remain in the body for years.
Major health organizations like The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the American Cancer Society (ACS) have noted that certain PFAS may be linked to cancer in firefighters.
The Navy and other branches of the military have used firefighting foam for decades, for training exercises and non-critical missions. It was so commonly use due to the ability to quickly extinguish jet fuel fires. However, the military is rapidly eliminating these types of foams.
The Down’s Law Group is currently investigating cases involving kidney, testicular, and pancreatic cancer after occupational exposure to firefighting foam.
Our brave firefighters put their lives on the line for us daily. Chemical giants manufacturing firefighting foam knowingly put millions of lives at risk of cancer when they failed to warn us of its toxic ingredients. Victims and advocates are coming together to recover the large cash settlements our firefighters deserve
