Just in time for the holidays, The Downs Law Group headquartered in Coconut Grove, Florida gathered a large donation of non-perishable food items for those in need within their community through Coconut Grove Crisis Food Pantry. Together, the firm donated nearly 100 items at the organization's drop off location before Thanksgiving. The donations went to those who need it most within the neighborhood.
This donation directly benefits many of the firm's neighbors who are clients in the Coconut Grove Lawsuit against the City of Miami for toxic pollution of a municipal trash incinerator coined 'Old Smokey' that operated in West Coconut Grove's neighborhood for almost 50 years. Old Smokey was ultimately closed in 1970 after the City of Coral Gables, a predominately white neighborhood at the time, filed a nuisance lawsuit based on the fact that ash emitted from the Old Smokey incinerator was reaching its residents’ homes. The ash spewed across the community by the incinerator, and eventually buried across several West Coconut Grove parks, contained chemicals such dioxins, arsenic, lead and antimony – chemicals which are well-known to be harmful to human health.
