Al Mesa
Al Mesa has had the honor of serving as the Controller for The Downs Law Group since 2016. In this pivotal role, his primary focus has been the financial well-being and sustainability of our law firm, which specializes in mass torts cases with a notable emphasis on the Deepwater Horizon BP oil spill litigation.
In his current position, Al has been able to identify opportunities for growth, as well as areas that require strategic improvement by closely monitoring key financial metrics and trends. This data-driven approach empowers the firm to make informed decisions, respond effectively to economic challenges, and ultimately strengthen our financial health. His expertise lies in overseeing financial planning and analysis, obtaining, and maintaining funding, and creating comprehensive financial strategies tailored to our unique needs. Al plays a crucial role in identifying opportunities for funding, whether through traditional means, grants, or strategic partnerships.
During Al’s tenure with the firm, he has also at-times overseen or handled HR, Payroll, Benefits, IT, Marketing, and Logistics for transportation of evidence across the country. Al will roll up his sleeves and assist wherever necessary when required by the firm.
Prior to joining the firm, Al was the Director of Compensation and Benefits at Mastec Inc, a 2 billion publicly traded company with over 12,000 employees at the time. While there, Al also served in numerous roles, including Stock Plan Administrator, Tax Manager, 401k Investment Committee Member and was able to internally assist with the creation of the Sarbanes Oxley controls. Al has also held the position of Tax Accountant at Terranova Corp and Sunglass Hut Corp.
Al received a BS in Accounting from Barry University in 1994 with a concentration in Computer Science.
